We Will Come Looking for You’: Rahul Gandhi Warns in Lok Sabha, Says Election Commission Law Will Be Changed Retrospectively

In a fiery moment during the Lok Sabha proceedings, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi delivered a sharp warning to the government, asserting that any law related to the Election Commission (EC)—particularly the one altering the process of appointing Election Commissioners—would be changed retrospectively if the Opposition comes to power. His strong words—“We will come looking for you”—sparked an intense political debate across the country.

Gandhi Slams EC Appointments, Calls New Law ‘Unconstitutional’

Rahul Gandhi criticised the government’s decision to pass a contentious law that replaces the Chief Justice of India with a Cabinet Minister in the committee responsible for selecting the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
He argued that such a move directly compromises the independence and neutrality of the Election Commission.

Gandhi noted that the Supreme Court had previously recommended a non-political, independent mechanism for appointments. Replacing the Chief Justice with an elected Cabinet Minister, he said, “opens the door for manipulation of elections.”

‘This Law Will Not Survive’: Opposition Says It Will Reverse It

During the heated debate, Gandhi asserted that the Opposition-led INDIA bloc would re-examine and reverse the law if it forms the government.
“We will undo this law, and we will do it retrospectively,” he said, repeating that those responsible for allegedly weakening democratic institutions would be held accountable.

The statement immediately drew protests from treasury benches, who accused Gandhi of issuing “threats” on the Parliament floor.

Government Dismisses Allegations; Says Law Strengthens EC

Union Ministers countered Gandhi’s attack, claiming the new law brings transparency and removes ambiguity in the selection process. They accused the Congress of spreading misinformation and politicising reforms intended to improve functionality.

The ruling party also highlighted that previous governments had not implemented any transparent system despite decades in power.

Political Reactions Pour In Nationwide

Soon after Gandhi’s remarks, political leaders across both camps reacted sharply:

  • Congress leaders backed Gandhi, saying the government is attempting to “capture” constitutional bodies ahead of upcoming elections.

  • BJP members criticised Gandhi’s tone, calling it a “direct intimidation”.

  • Regional parties issued mixed reactions—some supporting independent panels for EC appointments, others taking a neutral stand.

EC Independence Becomes National Debate

Gandhi’s statement has reignited discussions about electoral reforms, democratic processes, and the autonomy of constitutional institutions.
Experts argue that the EC plays a fundamental role in ensuring free and fair elections, and any perception of political influence risks damaging public trust.

What Happens Next?

The issue is expected to dominate Parliamentary speeches and political rallies in the coming weeks.
With major elections approaching, the Opposition is likely to continue questioning the government’s commitment to institutional independence.

As political temperatures rise, the nation watches closely to see whether this controversy becomes a defining election issue.
